William Dib
My personal website, WilliamDib.com, where I shamelessly share and promote my work. For this project, I wore many hats. I made decisions about the look-and-feel, voice, and brand; produced the interface and experience designs; created the visual and written content; and built everything from scratch by writing every last necessary word of code. I obsessed over each individual pixel and learnt an enormous amount in the process, from animation to typography.
Why
It's 2022, and if you're not shamelessly sharing something about yourself somewhere, you're not doing it right. That's what the Internet says. I've had a personal website since 2013. Almost a decade has passed by and, although the original site has gone through countless alterations, experiments, and designs, it remained largely light on content. It needed to share more. A renovation was in order.
The logo
My previous logo was a slice of (seedless) watermelon. I used that logo for years. On my invoices, business cards, and on the web. People loved it. I loved it. But over time, I noticed that there was something just not right about it. "Too much red?", "Too much colour?", "Too childlike?", I would wonder.
After spending more hours than I'm ready to admit adjusting hue and saturation values 1 point at a time, I decided to do what they always tell you to do: think outside the box. In this case, the box was the watermelon. But I didn't completely leave the box. Instead, I realised I had eliminated the most important element of a watermelon: the seed.
Without the seed, there would be no watermelon. No red, juicy flesh to enjoy on a hot summer day. Nothing. I tried it and instantly knew I had my new logo. Above, I put the old and the new side-by-side for you to judge for yourself. Sometimes, we need to reinvent ourselves without necessarily leaving everything behind. What better than a seed to remind me that my potential is high but, no matter my success, I remain small in this large, beautiful world.
